Tulips

Availability

Year Round, most if not all commercially grown tulips in New Zealand are forced, this means the bulb is given a cold treatment , giving it a
false sense of winter.

When placed in a warmer environment afterwards it will start producing a flower.

Origin

Native from Central Asia to the Mediterranean area

Flower Care

The  tulip has a vase life between 4 and 8  days, depending on the variety

Stems should be cut above the white area of the stem for better water uptake and this will help to keep them in the upright position and
prevent them from bending.

Stems often elongate after cutting, making them grow out of place in arrangements

Tulips and daffodils together are not a good mix as the slime from the daffodils is toxic to tulips.

General Info

The name tulip is the latinised word of the Arabic word for “ dulband” ( turban).  Turkish men customary wore tulips tucked in the folds of their turbans

During the 17th century in Holland, the popularity of tulips resulted in “ Tulipomania” and bulbs were incredibly
expensive and the subject of financial speculation.
