Asiatic Lily

Availability

Year round

Origin

Native to China and Japan. Common relatives include asparagus, lily-of-the-valley, daylily and hyacinth

Flower Care

These have a vase life of 4 to 11 days. Ensure all the leaves on the bottom are removed so there will be no foliage in the water, recut the stems and put in fresh water. Also a good idea to change the water every couple of days. To protect the petals it is better to remove the stamen as the flowers start opening, this also protects the rest of your house as the pollen can create a mess once it starts dropping.

General Info

Asiatic hybrids are the result of crosses using as many as 12 species of lilies. Crosses between the easter lily (lilium longiflorum) and either the asiatic or oriental hybrids have resulted in the LA and LO hybrids. The difference between the asiatic and oriental lily is flower size and fragrance with the asiatic having smaller flowers with no fragrance. Fragrant lilies are Orientals.  Some growers also credit the Asiatic with flowers that look upwards, rather than the Oriental that faces downwards.
