Many people would never dream of buying flowers for themselves, somehow thinking that they are only something that you are given or that you give to someone else. Flowers are a great way to brighten up the home and put smiles on the faces of everyone in the house.
Keep it simple
No need to go overboard with elaborate bouquets, simple, straightforward bunches will do the trick. Try a few of these simple arrangements to get you started:
- Two bunches of Tulips (either the same or two different colours) in a straight edged vase. Some smooth pebbles or glass marbles in the bottom of the vase will give you some control over how they stand.
- Three bunches of Gerberas in a bowl. No arranging needed, Gerbera’s wild funky colours lend themselves to the random, relaxed look.
- Three or four stems of wonderfully scented lilies or stock, in a nice tall vase. Lilies have a good reputation for lasting a long time.
- Just a bunch of sunflowers on their own. Some marbles or smooth pebbles in the bottom of the vase will help keep them from flopping about.
- A wonderful bunch of roses mixed or in one colour will do wonders.
The sky really is the limit, keep an open mind and let your creativity soar.
Vases
Vases don’t have to be expensive and it is really handy to have a variety of different styles, shapes, sizes and colours. Glass, plastic, ceramic or metal doesn’t matter – use a large drinking glass or gumboot full of water if you have to!
Positive Vibe
Flowers can brighten just about any space and create a feeling of comfort wherever they are. They are the finishing touch that makes a house feel like home, as well as giving you that ‘I deserve it’ feeling.
This can be especially useful when your house is in an unavoidable mess due to things like renovating or redecorating. Bare wires hanging out of holes cut in unpainted GIB board may be an eyesore, but you’ll be surprised how well a strategically placed bunch of flowers can divert your attention.
Why not?
So what’s your best excuse for not having flowers? Is it because they’re:
- Expensive?
No way, there are plenty of specials to be found at your local Flowers Work Wonders retailer, and many in-season varieties are very reasonably priced.
- Not lasting?
Choose long lasting varieties that are fresh as possible. Look for blooms in bud, not too open but showing some colour. Leaves are often a good indicator; they should be green and fresh, and the bottom of the stems should be clean.
Ask for advice from your local Flowers Work Wonders retailer, they’ll be able to give you a recommendation and maybe even look out for your favourites next time they are at the markets.
- Not value for money?
Wait for the smiles, listen to the laughter and ‘smell the roses’ – you can’t put a price on that!
- Don’t know where to get them?
